Merlefest was a total blast. I hope that there will be a recording available of any of the Alison Krauss and Union Station/ Tony Rice shows, Alison's vocals on the old Lightfoot song "Shadows" were amazing. It would be a shame for a show as special as this to not be recorded.
Congrats go out to Dunbar, WV resident Matt Lindsey who won the flatpick guitar contest at Merlefest this year, and to all the other winners as well. The workshops I attended were entertaining and informative as well, The common theme to them was practicing for 5-10 minutes at a time 12 times a day is better than spending a few hours or so. One of the guys at the Mandomania one said that listening to a lot is important too, since if it's in your head it's easier to get it to your hands. I also heard 10 different peoples interpretation of "Jerusalem Ridge", at two different workshops
I also learned the name of a song that I've been hearing for ages, it's called either "Ralph's Banjo Special", or "Daybreak in Dixie".
The Brushy Mountain Smokehouse was great. I had the buffet, served with what
anahata56 calls "The Table Wine of the South", sweetened iced tea, I normally avoid sweetened iced tea, but unsweetened isn't an option at this place. The restuarant was decorated with pictures from the old North Wilkesboro racetrack, and other local history including a moonshine still.
I'm sure there will be more details surfacing over the next few days, but that's all for now
