This year's Christmas Jam trip has come and gone, and it seems like a blur this year. I went to pick up the midsize rental car Tuesday night to find that the Camry they had was damaged (broken windshield), so I got upgraded to a Town and Country minivan. I went in early Wed. so I could leave work early and snooze a bit before hitting the road. I had dinner with Susan and got on the road about 5:30 or so. The Town and Country was very comfortable so I drove straight down to Asheville, arriving at about 11 PM. I check in, and go to the local Ingles Market to get a toothbrush, a sandwich and a six pack. Vacation was underway.

Thursday I realized I only had one pair of jeans packed, so I make a mental note to get another pair. On the agenda was a tour of the Sierra Nevada Brewery. I gotta say the tour was one of the best I've ever been on. Very nice facilities and great tour guide. They are still working on the restaurant/tap room and some other features which should be finished around March. I can't wait to see it fully up and running.

Friday was Before the Jam lend a hand. This year I worked with the siding crew. Warren came out and performed an acoustic version of "Soulshine" during the wall raising of one of the houses. After that I went downtown to meet up with Joe who had driven down that day. A few beers were consumed at Barley's Pizza and Taproom, and a few more at Wicked Weed Brewing.

The next day was The Christmas Jam itself. After warming up at the Thirsty Monk I sold my extra ticket, and we got in line. First up the evening was "The Love Canyon Rangers", a combination of Love Canon and The Steep Canyon Rangers, they performed a few traditional bluegrass tunes and also a tune by the Texas Bluegrass Trio ZZTOP called "Legs". Some of you may have heard it. They also performed The Dukes of Hazard Theme. The Steep Canyon Rangers back Steve Martin on the majority of his shows, and Love Canon is out of Charlottesville, VA and they mostly perform 80s tunes bluegrass style and do a very good job with them.

Warren came out with Caleb Johnson and performed an acoustic version of "Soulshine"

Up next were the Revivalists, They played a brief set, I liked what I heard, but I don't know if I could have listened to a much more than half hour of them.

Love Canon came back out and performed a set while the crew set up the stage for Hard Working Americans. I really like this band a LOT. I would gladly go see them again and again.

after Love Canon entertained the crowd again it was Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, with his wife Amanda Shires playing fiddle and singing. They performed some of their more upbeat material. Nothing with a body count. It was nice seeing the audience sing along with "Cover Me Up". I was hoping for "Outfit" or "Alabama Pines" but his set was great.

The Christmas Jam Band featuring Warren Haynes, Jack Pearson, Oteil Burbridge, Danny Louis, and Paul Riddle came out next. Vince Gill was on the lineup but due to the passing of the singer in his band Time Jumpers he was unable to attend. The band played a set of Marshall Tucker Band songs.

Up next was Gov't Mule along with Jackie Green, they played a set of Neil Young songs, and then they were joined by Caleb Johnson for "Stay With Me" and "Trampled Underfoot"

Love Cannon came out again and then it was Billy and the Kids featuring Grateful Dead drummer Billy Kreutzman, who played a set of Grateful Dead tunes, one featuring Col. Bruce Hampton (ret,), and a couple of Beatles tunes with Warren before closing out the evening with "The Night They drove old dixie down".

The show ended at 3 AM. After taking Joe back to his hotel, I got back to mine at 4 AM.
