On this date in 1971 Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention played at the casino complex on Lake Geneva at Montreux Switzerland. During the performance a fan fired a flare gun towards the ceiling causing a fire that destroyed the entire complex. Claude Nobs, , the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival, is credited with saving several fans who thought that they would be safe inside part of the casino. Meanwhile, Deep Purple was in town to record an album using a mobile recording studio that they rented from The Rolling Stones. They were slated to record at the Casino, but were forced to find another location, due to complaints they had to leave one location and finally set up at the Grand Hotel to record.
